TypeSteward

TypeSteward for macOS · Public beta

Your fonts.More possibilities.

Convert font formats, repair family names and transfer kerning or metrics. Keep your originals and see exactly what changed in a verification report.

Public beta until 21 November 2026. Free, no registration. This page introduces the tools and helps you get started. macOS 12 or later · Apple silicon and Intel.

Three tools. One clear record.Public beta
01
Convert

A font in the format you need.

02
Family

Related styles together in font menus.

03
Transfer

Selected data in a new target copy.

Font processing stays on your Mac. Outputs are new files and are re-read from disk for verification.

Choose the job.
Keep the original.

These are separate workflows. Family repair changes naming and style metadata; Transfer copies selected font data. Neither mixes glyph shapes from different fonts.

01 / Convert

Change the format

Create OTF, TTF, WOFF or WOFF2 output, or bring supported legacy inputs into a modern format.

Example: prepare WOFF2 files from desktop fonts for a website. The report explains what was preserved, changed or could not be preserved.

02 / Family

Put styles in order

Repair family and style names so related weights and their italic variants are grouped consistently in font menus.

Example: give Regular, Bold and Italic one family name. Preview modern and legacy menu grouping before writing.

Family instructions →
03 / Transfer

Reuse kerning or metrics

Copy kerning pairs, kerning classes, advance widths or line metrics between compatible static fonts.

Example: transfer kerning from one related style to another. Selected categories replace the target data in a new copy.

Public beta · until 21 Nov 2026

TypeSteward is a prerelease version and may contain errors. Work with copies of your font files and check the results before using them. Only use fonts you are permitted to modify.

Terms: beta-2026-10-26-public. You accept them on the download page. No registration, no marketing consent.

The beta comes as a ZIP archive for Apple silicon and Intel. The seven days of editing start only when you activate the trial in the app.

A small first test.

Start with a few fonts you are allowed to process, not your entire library. Keep a backup and check beta results before using them in production.

The app currently speaks English. This guide is available in English and German. Switching this page’s language does not change the app language.

  1. Install the beta.

Download the ZIP from the download page, unzip it and open the DMG inside, drag TypeSteward into Applications and launch that installed copy.

  2. Activate the seven-day trial.

Click the gear icon → Settings → Start 7-day trial. The trial starts when you activate it, not when you download. An internet connection is needed for this activation; afterwards it works offline.

  3. Choose one workflow.

Try Convert with one font, Family with a small related family, or Transfer with one source and one target. Review the names, choices and output destination before writing.

  4. Read the result.

Open Notes to review and the verification details. Show output in folder selects the exported file in your file manager. Originals and existing outputs are never overwritten.

From input
to checked output.

Use the names below to find the matching controls in the app. Open the workflow you want to try.

01Convert: a different font format
  1. Add a font, folder or ZIP archive in Convert.
  2. Choose the output format and destination. Leave optional changes off unless you need them.
  3. Start conversion. One failed input does not stop the rest of a batch.
  4. Read the report and its notes; compare preserved and changed properties, then use Show outputs in folder.

Good to know: format conversion is not always lossless. For example, a change of outline format may affect hinting. The report describes the result rather than promising identical bytes.

02Family: repair names and style linking
  1. Add related static fonts in Family. Review the suggested groups and family/style names.
  2. Edit the shared family name or individual style names. Each face within one family needs a unique style name, for example Bold and Bold Italic.
  3. Only combine groups that belong together: select them in the group overview, choose a shared name and use Combine selected groups. Selecting a group alone changes nothing. Unrelated families should stay separate.
  4. Check Menu preview. If writing is blocked, use Review all conflicts or Show problem to find the affected faces.
  5. Write repaired copies and inspect their verification report. Files and glyph shapes remain separate, even when groups share a family name.

Duplicates? Folder import also scans subfolders. If you included an old Repaired folder, remove those duplicate entries from the session. Remove does not delete the files on disk.

03Transfer: kerning and metrics
  1. Choose a Source font containing the data to copy, and a different Target font that will receive it in a new copy.
  2. Inspect Glyph matching. Uncertain matches are not guessed; review them before continuing.
  3. For kerning, use both Explicit kerning pairs and Kerning classes when replacing all kerning. A partial selection can conflict with retained target kerning; use Replace all kerning or Transfer without kerning if prompted.
  4. For a small metrics test, select just Advance widths or Vertical metrics and line spacing. At least one available category must be selected. Independent sidebearing changes are available only for compatible TrueType-outline targets.
  5. Review What will happen, the structural details and Before and after. Resolve Needs attention items, then write the new target copy.

Replace, not add: the selected target categories are replaced by the mapped source data. Other categories are retained. Target glyph shapes are not replaced.

Questions about the beta.

A note is not necessarily a failure. Some limits intentionally prevent an unsafe or ambiguous result.

What do notes and Needs attention mean?

Notes to review explain changes, limitations or source-font metadata after an export; they do not automatically mean the export failed. Read them alongside the verification result.

Needs attention before writing means the plan is blocked. The message explains what needs resolving, such as duplicate style names or conflicting kerning categories.

Can I use variable fonts or collections?

Family repair currently supports static, single-face OTF, TTF, WOFF and WOFF2 fonts, not variable fonts or collections. Export the instances you need as static fonts first. Transfer is intended for compatible static OTF/TTF fonts; unsupported structures or unsafe choices are blocked.

Font mixing, app translations and a Windows release are not included in this beta.

Do fonts leave my Mac?

Font processing is local. Trial activation sends the product identifier, major version, protocol version and a stable pseudonymous installation identifier over HTTPS. The identifier is a hash of a random secret stored locally, not a hardware ID. The hosting provider also receives your IP address. The request contains no fonts, filenames, paths or reports. Once activated, the trial works offline. There are no automatic font, report or crash uploads.

Feedback is sent only when you choose to email it. Do not attach commercial fonts or confidential client material without first agreeing on a secure way to send them.

What happens after seven days?

The activated trial enables writing for seven days. After it expires, you can still inspect fonts, review plans and read existing reports, but writing needs a valid licence. Reinstalling does not restart the trial.

Use only fonts whose licences permit your intended processing. TypeSteward does not grant additional font rights or remove that responsibility.
